Swede Anna Hellqvist had been making soap for years as a hobby, when a move to Newfoundland with her partner Jason Bailey prompted the opening of their own business in 2003. Soon after, Jason’s brother Bobby left a career with a well-known makeup company in Toronto, and moved home too. The three created Tvål, which now employs six, who bring together incredibly diverse expertise to make good product.

Soap. The simplicity of the name Tvål (“soap” in Swedish) is reflective of the simplicity of their recipes. As a small company, everything is made in small batches, meaning good quality control and staying true to their values. They make pretty much everything in skincare needs – soap (bar, liquid, in the shape of cupcakes), shampoo, bath bombs, bubble bath, moisturizers, toners, and makeup to name just a few. Tvål also offers vegan, all-natural, and fragrance free options.

Tvål is constantly looking for ways to make their products more environmentally friendly. The packaging is 90% recyclable, and they use glass over plastic wherever possible. Tvål also sells eco-friendly, all-natural laundry soap and made the switch away from microplastic glitter, for the health of our water systems and the living things in them.

Having recently moved to a bigger space, Tvål can now host more community events. So far, they have held a yoga class, a clothing store pop-up, and a stop for the Lawnya Vawnya music crawl. In their future, they see even more involvement in the community, continuing to innovate, researching to make their products more eco-friendly, and continuing to craft their high quality products in small, careful batches. As Tvål always says, “life’s too short for bad soap”!
